What's happening, hotstuff?
I've been waiting seven long months to break out the Long Duck Dong, but now that I have enough fellow Asian guys in the Creative Social Club to appreciate that particular bit of racial stereotypical humor, it was time. Don't be surprised to see me use it again (it's thematic). For those of you who have never seen
Sixteen Candles, here's the scene:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTchUep_bmg I thought CONVERSATION SALON NUMERO UNO turned out well. The early feedback has been positive. Moreover, it confirmed to me the model of the type of event that I would like to organize, what the limitations are, and what we can realistically achieve as a Club and I as the Organizer. To me, the singular beauty of Meetup is that it can provide people who are
motivated to meet other people opportunities to meet those who have common interests. THAT'S IT, and I believe it's something of tremendous value (for people who might like some new friends). My job is to get an attractive venue arranged and communicated early enough for people to plan around the event, manage the event, and be the straw that stirs the drink. I am happy to do that.
Therefore, I announce
Conversation Salon #2: Saturday Night Fever on Saturday night, March 27th, at 8 PM.
Tentatively, the venue is Murasaki Chicago. Just go to
http://murasakichicago.com/index.htm. It smacks of cool. I missed a great Tweetup there that was organized by @tokyofan on February 24th, so I am just going to openly plagiarize his idea and hope he receives my imitation as the highest form of flattery. I think experiencing new, fun venues in Chicago's rich nightlife scene will be a key value proposition of the Conversation Salons, so I am targeting Murasaki Chicago as our venue for March 27th.
I encourage you to RSVP "Yes" NOW to
Conversation Salon #2: Saturday Night Fever. Sure, it's a Saturday night. My Meetups are weekend-worthy; consider if you will meet as many creatively-oriented people who are
motivated to meet at a party or a night club. If you have a date already planned that far in advance, perhaps you are dating a compulsive planner, and need to get out of the relationship. If you think you might have a date on that weekend with that special someone, schedule it for Friday. He or she will understand; you should only be with people who
really like you anyway. If you are one of those peeps who (there's quite a few of you) constantly checks the RSVP photos before committing to attend my Meetups, trust me: you never know whom you might meet until you show up. You could be very pleasantly surprised, and your commitment to an event will motivate others to commit. The dynamics of human relationships (of whatever kind) are hit-or-miss, and according to Sonja Foxe, our resident astrologer, your chances of meeting someone with whom you click (in whatever way) are
ONE IN FOUR. Life is a game of numbers, and I want to have our Conversation Salon attendance consistently in the 25 - 40 range, so that everyone has the reasonable possibility to make a connection.
How is
Conversation Salon #2: Saturday Night Fever going to work? You can arrive late if you wish, but the actual
Moderated Portion will begin at 8 PM, no delays. Those who arrive on time will go hard at the topics until so many people have arrived and are enjoying proper social lubrication, that it makes sense to break up the
Moderated Portion and get to our real objective,
Serious Socializing. You
could use the suggested topics below during
Serious Socializing as icebreakers, but I know you will do what comes naturally, you social animal you. I will try to reserve the largest, quietest no-charge area that I can, as well as prearrange separate checks.
Here are the suggested topics for Conversation Salon #2: Saturday Night Fever:
- Saturday Night Fever and other John Travolta films: what do you like?
- Portrayals of race in American film: The Long Duck Dong Legacy
- Ayn Rand: Some people love her, some people hate her! (carryover from CONVERSATION SALON NUMERO UNO)
- Too many earthquakes: 2012 Apocalypse? (the Apocalypse in art, literature, film, etc.)
- Graphic novels: Jester talks for a few minutes until people openly start to tune out
- Matisse: Radical Invention, 1913 - 1917 (upcoming new exhibit at The Art Institute)
- Indie rock versus every other kind of rock: what's the big deal, hipster?
- Television-watching guilty pleasures
- The Chicago creative scene: tales from the front
Your suggestions for other topics are welcome. Now, RSVP "Yes". And oh, bring a friend, take a friend.
