SUMMARY:Don't Be Square\, Join Us at Lincoln Square
DESCRIPTION:Chicago Creative Social Club\n\nThanks to Alex\, Henri\, John\,
Mona\, and Tristan for joining me at last night's Burrito & No Dough Rock
Show #1. We had a blast! Photos from Double Door are up at http://www.cre
ativesocialclub.com/calendar/13409002/. I have a few other Meetups in the
works\, but I wanted to get this next one scheduled and announced right awa
 y. This is the easiest Meetup you can imagine. Got a portable outdoor cha
ir? Take it with you. Got a few bucks? Buy a sandwich and drink or bring
dough for a bratwurst and beers. Take the CTA Brown Line\, drive\, or wal
k to Lincoln Square\, specifically Giddings Plaza at 4731 North Lincoln Ave
nue. Right outside the outdoor patio of Cafe Selmarie (4729 North Lincoln
Avenue)\, to the left of the "stage" (see http://bit.ly/9GDbl4)\, we will g
ather for the Lincoln Square Concert Series on Thursday\, July 29th\, at 6
PM. This is a TERRIFIC free outdoor summer event. Giddings Plaza is big e
nough to hold a crowd\, but small and contained enough so that it still fee
ls INTIMATE. This is no Millennium Park\, much less Grant Park. There are
kids and families...and good-looking young professionals and creative type
 s. The atmosphere is RELAXED and fun\, ideal for socializin'\, chillin'\,
and people-watchin'. There are vendors to provide concessions and even a
farmers' market. Henri\, Mona\, and I went last Thursday with a different
Meetup Group and had such a great time\, we decided to do this Meetup on Ju
ly 29th. Haywood Yards\, a blue grass band\, is scheduled to perform. Whe
n we went last week\, I was not excited about seeing Sons of the Never Wron
g\, a "turbo charged folk" band. But that band blew me away\; it reminded
me of early Sarah McLachlan while others thought of Indigo Girls. I think
Lincoln Square Chamber of Commerce\, which organizes the Series\, has a goo
d feel for entertainment\, so it should be a great performance on July 29th
. After the concert\, if some of us are so inclined\, Lincoln Square has a
formidable range of nightspots at which we can continue the evening. Rele

SUMMARY:Sangria Salon: Inception and All the Movie Talk You Can Handle
DESCRIPTION:Chicago Creative Social Club\n\nOur Conversation Salons have be
en among the best Meetups we have had\, and it is time for not one\, but TW
O new Conversation Salons. The first of these new salons will be "Sangria
Salon: Inception and All the Movie Talk You Can Handle". It will be held o
 n Saturday\, August 21\, 2010 at Moody's Pub\, 5910 North Broadway\, beginn
ing at 7 PM. Moody's Pub (http://www.moodyspub.com/) is a bit out of the w
ay for many members\, but I have to tell you: Moody's may just be the best
beer garden in Chicago\, a city with an endless treasure trove of terrific
bars. What makes it great? The $9.50 pitchers of sangria\, washing down t
he $8 half-pound Moody Bleu Burger burgers\, in a huge\, relaxed outdoor be
er garden. Watch this video\, http://youtu.be/WeAGPg2EtLY. Moody's is rig
ht on the Red Line by the Thorndale el stop and it has a free parking lot.
Hat tip to Roz for suggesting Moody's\; I did my "reconnaissance" and I ca
nnot wait to go back. What is a Conversation Salon? In February\, I defin
ed it as "a gathering of people to have an exchange of ideas about a group
of topics". As the title implies\, in this salon\, we will focus on movies
\, movies\, and more movies (or film\, if you prefer ). In the past\, we c
overed a variety of creative topics\, but with Inception (which I myself ha
ve not decided whether I liked\, 24 hours after seeing it) coming out\, and
a summer of movies winding down by August 21\, just movies alone should ma
ke for a very lively conversation. Topics to be discussed in this salon in
clude but are not limited to (suggestions are welcome and this list will be
refined as the date approaches): A completely SPOILERFUL discussion of w
hy I should like or dislike Inception (you have more than one month to see
it) Movies that we are supposed to like but do not\, inspired by Roger Eber
t's blog post\, http://j.mp/d4KOHm Comparing apples to apples? Inception ve
rsus Shutter Island The other films of Leonardo DiCaprio Comparing apples t
o oranges: Inception versus Hard Candy (if you have Comcast\, Hard Candy is
currently available FREE via On Demand) The other films of Ellen Page and
"What is she doing on Cisco commercials?" The other films of Christopher No
lan The best and worst of this summer's movies Top independent films of 201
0 The films of Sofia Coppola The films of Francis Ford Coppola Movies we ar
e so ashamed of liking that we would not tell our best friends\, yet we wou
ld gladly tell people we just met after a pitcher of sangria Any other film
s that randomly pop into our heads (Shaun of the Dead\, anybody?) Any perso
nal experiences YOU may have in film production Any other film topic you co
uld possibly want to discuss after all that! \n\nChicago\, IL 60660 - USA

SUMMARY:Coffee Salon: Creative Show-and-Tell\, Design Chit-Chat\, and Other
  Shop Talk
DESCRIPTION:Chicago Creative Social Club\n\n Our Conversation Salons have
been among the best Meetups we have had\, and it is time for not one\, but
TWO new Conversation Salons. The second of these new salons will be "Coffe
e Salon: Creative Show-and-Tell\, Design Chit-Chat\, and Other Shop Talk".
  It will be held on Saturday\, September 18\, 2010 at Dollop\, 4181 North C
larendon\, beginning at 10 AM (tentatively). Dollop Coffee & Tea (http://d
ollopcoffee.com/) is a North Side coffee shop with reasonable coffee-snob s
treet cred and has been used by other Meetup Groups for their events. It i
s relaxed and fairly cozy (actually\, I consider it a bit dingy\, but dingy
is ideal for what I want to do with this Meetup)\, has free WiFi\, and is
not far from the Red Line. Best of all\, it has a wealth of board games in
the back room for Henri and I to play in case we are the only two people w
ho show up. This Conversation Salon will be a departure from past Salons
and any other Meetups we have attempted to date with the Creative Social Cl
ub. No\, it is not just the daytime scheduling and the lack of alcohol.
In this Meetup\, we do not want to consume or appreciate other people's cre
ative work. In this Meetup\, WE CALL ON ALL CREATIVE MEMBERS TO SHOW AND T
ELL US ABOUT YOUR WORK\, ideally (but not necessarily) on a laptop\, whethe
 r it be some design\, video\, photographic\, music\, written\, multimedia\,
or other creative work. If you do not have your own work\, you can show a
nd tell us about the work of someone else which you like (or even dislike\,
for that matter) in particular. The idea here is to get into the nitty gr
itty of creativity\, and to begin a monthly Saturday coffee dialog among cr
eative people about creative things. WE WANT ACTIVE SHOW-AND-TELL PARTICIP
ANTS\, so please tell us what you would like to discuss. Topics in this sa
lon include but are not limited to the following\, and this list will be re
fined as the date approaches: The design logic that went into the Creative
Social Club Web site (yes\, there actually is a logic and custom elements)
Online color tools that I use My favorite blogs Henri's show-and-tell YOUR
show-and-tell How are you using social media to advance your creative purs
uits? Other creativity-related technologies you would like to discuss (in s
ome Meetups\, we have discussed the joys of PHP\, as one example) Creative
goings-on in Chicago If all else fails\, board games! \n\nChicago\, IL 606

SUMMARY:The Festival of St. George (Harrison)
DESCRIPTION:Chicago Creative Social Club\n\nIt is very rare for a Meetup to
be announced a year in advance\, but I wanted to put a stake in the ground
for the Creative Social Club to celebrate the life of the great George Har
rison with a viewing of Martin Scorsese's upcoming biographical documentary
\, Living in the Material World: George Harrison. With the film in post-pr
oduction as of mid-May 2010 and Mr. Scorsese pitching for distribution and
targeting a 2011 release\, I am making a huge assumption here that the movi
e will be released in time for George Harrison's birthday on Friday\, Febru
ary 25th\, 2011\, so I am targeting a matinee on the following Saturday aft
ernoon. Also for the sake of scheduling this Meetup\, I am assuming that t
he movie will be playing at the Landmark Century Centre Cinema\, 2828 North
Clark Street. Why am I making such a big deal of George Harrison and S
corsese's film? As I reflected on my one-year anniversary of organizing th
e Creative Social Club\, I contemplated the underlying impulse for why I do
this (beyond the fun and the friends). Recognition came quickly when I li
stened to a few Harrison classics\, including The Traveling Wilburys' End o
f the Line\, The Beatles' While My Guitar Gently Weeps\, and Harrison's own
cover of Got My Mind Set on You. It occurred to me that George Harrison r
epresented the highest ideals\, the deepest meanings\, and the greatest tri
umphs of the creative life. From his early struggles as the "baby brother"
youngest member of the Beatles to his ascendancy as a songwriter by the ba
nd's demise\; his humility in bringing in his good friend Eric Clapton to p
lay lead guitar on While My Guitar\; his equanimity when his wife Pattie Bo
yd left him for Clapton\; his lifelong charity and quest for personal and s
piritual completeness\; his early successes\, subsequent failures and adver
sities\, and ultimate resurgence as a solo artist\; his humor and maturatio
n as a man\, husband\, father\, and friend that he shared in his work\; and
his grace at the end and posthumous transcendence to a legend even more lo
ved and revered\, Harrison is an inspiration and an example. For now\,
the Meetup will consist of the matinee followed by a "debrief" at nearby E
 nglish pub\, The Firkin &amp\; Pheasant\, 670 West Diversey Parkway\, but w
e will endeavor to make this a truly special Meetup worthy of George Harris
 on.\n\nChicago\, IL 60657 - USA\n\nSaturday\, February 26 at 2:00 PM\n\nPh
